ProgressiveDoctors.com believes Integrative, Conventional, Traditional and Alternative Medicine all belong together and should be referred to as "natural health care".  Natural health care is what Physicians, Medical Doctors, Medicine Men & Women, Midwives, Shamans, and Healers have used to treat common and uncommon conditions and ailments for thousands of years.

What is now termed Modern or Conventional medicine, from our current perspective in history, is knowledge that has been gained in the last hundred years or so and deemed superior to all else that came before it. While in reality, that may not be always the case.

We also believe that referring to "orthodox" (Western) medicine as "traditional" medicine, implies that all the "alternative" forms of treatment are "non-traditional". Given a brief review of the history of medicine and pharmacology, one would have to come to the conclusion that the opposite is true. What we now consider "mainstream" (orthodox/Western) medicine, is something relatively new to the history of mankind.

As public awareness grows and people begin to realize what drives Western medicine, our belief in an all-caring pharmaceutical utopia without consequences begins to fade quickly with the realization that science and technology may create as many problems as they solve (i.e. antibiotic resistant organisms, GMO foods, devices and therapies that do not work well - but are used anyway, etc.).

In an era with an eye on greater balance and a healthier respect of nature, ProgressiveDoctors.com has re-kindled ancient and not-so-ancient healing modalities; foremost among these are organic sourced vitamins and minerals, known to man for centuries, forgotten in the post-war years of Western medicine.

Our belief in natural health care in no way denies the heroic achievements of orthodox medicine in the last century. We live in a time when it is possible to have hip and knee replacement surgery; coronary artery bypass operations are almost routine; very seldom does anyone in a western civilization die from appendicitis or a tooth infection; and child birth is no longer the leading cause of death among women under 40; as it was at the turn of the 19th century.

Therefore - We strongly believe that orthodox medicine should be implemented in acute life threatening situations and/or if orthodox medicine treats it safely and efficiently. Examples are: myocardial infarction (heart attack), bleeding ulcer, diabetic shock, gun shot wounds, etc. There will always be plenty of work for Western doctors.

ProgressiveDoctors.com is also aware that some orthodox therapies in many instances are potentially worse than the illnesses they are intending to treat. A prime example is the treatment of toe nail fungus with oral/systemic (whole body) anti-fungal pills. As mentioned above, not only are many current treatments for common conditions and ailments potent, invasive and dangerous; they are also very expensive. More often than not, many people on limited incomes and without insurance are forced to choose whether they fill their prescription(s), or their grocery cart. Some studies have shown that up to 55% of all prescriptions written go unfilled due to their high cost.
